Facing Aged Care Decisions? You’re Not Alone.

Navigating aged care can feel overwhelming—especially when urgent decisions must be made about a loved one’s wellbeing, finances, and future. The costs, government rules, and paperwork are complex, and making the wrong financial choice can be costly. That’s where an aged care financial planner or later life advisor can make all the difference.

What an Aged Care Financial Advisor Does

An aged care financial planner is a qualified aged care specialist who helps families understand and manage the financial side of aged care. Their expertise can guide you through:

  • Explaining and comparing costs such as RADs, DAPs, and means-tested care fees
  • Assessing how aged care impacts the age pension or DVA benefits
  • Advising whether to keep or sell the family home
  • Structuring your finances to make aged care planning more affordable
  • Preserving family wealth and minimising tax
  • Coordinating with solicitors, accountants, and care providers

Whether you’re planning ahead or facing an urgent situation, an aged care advisor provides personalised guidance for your unique circumstances.

When to Get Financial Advice

You should consider working with an aged care advisor when:

  • A loved one is entering residential aged care
  • You need help understanding aged care planning options
  • You’re transitioning between home care and residential care
  • A sudden health event forces rapid decisions
  • You want to reduce the financial impact and preserve family assets

Getting advice early from an aged care financial planner often results in better outcomes—both financially and emotionally.

Why It Matters

A professional aged care financial advisor helps you:

  • Avoid common financial pitfalls in the aged care system
  • Make informed, confident decisions under pressure
  • Maximise government subsidies and minimise fees
  • Focus on supporting your loved one while the financial details are handled professionally

If you want a financial planner who speaks in the first person read on……

Although my job title says Financial Planner, my role is better described as somewhere between an asset project manager and a financial coach. Because, for me, finances are such an integral part of people’s wellbeing that it can’t all be about the numbers. Relationships always come first, not a financial plan. So, I will get a real sense of what you are trying to achieve, and what drives you, before we create your plan to financial freedom.

Where I add the most value is in amplifying success for my clients. Most have high incomes and a large asset base, and they look to me to develop their portfolios with robust strategies designed to achieve their goals, whether that be income requirements or capital growth. My recommendations aren’t clouded by offers of commissions, as I don’t take any from providers of new products. All of which builds trust.

Now, if you’re looking for a Financial Planner ‘Trusted Adviser’ is a buzzword that’s thrown around a lot in financial services. So much so that it’s lost all meaning. I think that real trust only comes with time and is proven. That’s why I’m most proud of the intergenerational wealth management side of my business, which means trust is handed down through a family year on year.

If you’re looking for a Financial Coach/Project Manager, then please get in touch.

You’ll see plenty of qualifications below. However, they are only a part of the equation. Drawing on my experience to fully understand the impact my advice will have on your situation is where the real value of my service comes in.

Qualifications

  • Certified Financial Planner
  • Accredited Estate Planning Strategist
  • ALPA – ASX Listed Product Adviser

Profile pictureof John Hollyman, a financial advisor in Sydney, with Eqeus
Top 10 Sydney

Certified Financial Planner®, Aged Care Specialist, B Bus (Acc&Fin)

Advisor Since: 2001  | . | LinkedIn

His clients say it is his honesty, pragmatism and the fundamental desire to get things done that sets him apart from others in his field, while his peers cite trustworthiness, clear strategic thinking and a thoroughness that goes above and beyond expectations. It is these qualities that equip John for the role of Eqeus Managing Director, where he leads an innovative, yet grounded, team of financial professionals committed to offering a fresh approach to financial planning.

Developing close relationships with his clients, who include young adults accumulating wealth and those in their middle years consolidating and planning retirement, is an area that he continues to enjoy. John says that amongst his strongest skills are his ability to analyse then communicate complex matters through practical roll-out strategies, a proficiency that he intends to nurture within Eqeus’ strategic and original thinking. John understands that regardless of stage of life, his clients have aspirations and goals that often need a coach and mentor to bring to fruition.

While researching, planning and providing a tailored financial strategy are among his technical skillset, it is close listening, understanding and interpretation of needs where John excels to define personal goals and financial planning objectives aimed at helping his clients achieve their personal vision.

After graduating university, John worked as an accountant, moved on to become a paraplanner with a major financial services group, stepped up to financial planner, moved into the role of business development manager with a major property developer before settling in to his role at RK Financial Planning, which proceeded his Eqeus evolution.

His success also has a lot to do with life experiences. At 17 years of age, John’s family home was gutted during the Sydney bushfires. Everything he owned, and everything his parents had worked for, was destroyed. It was a life changing event and John says that as an introverted and quiet young man it brought a realisation that life is to be lived and material things are just that.
Importantly, he learned that planning for the unexpected and having a financial plan that is flexible and able to adapt to your changing life circumstances is essential for establishing the support necessary for financial and emotional recovery.

It was perhaps this personal experience that paved the way for John’s career in financial planning – a role which allows him to help clients to organise, understand, anticipate risk and make the most of their financial affairs for now and in the future.

Personally…
Away from the office, John’s most important job is being a father to his children Ryan, Mackenzie and Madison. While these days a couple of nagging injuries see him more on the sideline than on the field he has enjoyed his share of accolades since he began playing hockey at the age of seven. John played 1st Grade for more than 10 years and scored a couple of Best & Fairest awards including Best Player in a Grand Final and the University Blue Sporting Award from UTS. He has been a good club man too – Treasurer for a few seasons and now a coach – roles that match his innate sense of team work and mentoring.

Founder and co-director. CFP®, BA, Grad Dip Sociology, Diploma FP

Erika commenced PrimeCare Financial Planning in 2007 in response to a growing community need to provide personal financial advice to people working through the financial maze for Aged Care.

Erika is a co-author for the Australian Master Financial Planning Guide (Wolters Kluwer) on Aged Care and Retirement Living from 2010 to present. This is a prestigious manual used by accountants, lawyers, finance students, Government Departments, financial planners and universities. She is the forerunner on training the industry on the complexities of aged care.

Erika is also on the Board for a not for profit language specific aged care facility. Being on the Board of an aged care facility, allows Erika to provide her expertise to management and concurrently she broadens her experience and knowledge on the operations of an aged care facility. On this basis she has a greater knowledge base to assist her clients with the understanding of aged care.

Erika was also on the Board of Peninsula Health (a large public hospital network on the Mornington Peninsula) for 6 years. Again, the experience she acquired whilst on this Hospital Board, allowed Erika to gain further knowledge and information about how and why patients are transitioned into aged care from a hospital perspective.

With her current and past experiences across a range of significant aged care influences, Erika, is an industry leader and is therefore able to provide her clients with the best aged care advice and information possible within Australia.
